Sri Venkateswara University was established in 1954, in Tirupati to cater the educational needs and aspirations of people of the Rayalaseema Region of Andhra Pradesh. After completing 68 years of excellence in teaching, research, extension and outreach activities, the University is committed to cater the needs of higher education offering a full range of post-graduate programs in Arts, Sciences, Law, Management, Education, Physical Education, Engineering and Pharmacy disciplines. From a humble beginning of one College with six departments, the University has now grown into the second largest University in Andhra Pradesh having five constituent Colleges Viz. College of Arts, College of Sciences, College of Commerce, Management & Computer Science, College of Pharmacy, and College of Engineering accommodating 52 departments offering 88 programs.
Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering was established in the year 1959 inside the University Campus at the foot hills of Tirumala. Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, laid foundation on October 13, 1959 for permanent buildings and was declared open on November 21, 1968 by Sri K. BramThe college has started functioning in the main building by 1968, with additional wings for civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Subsequently, with the new disciplines like electronics and communication engineering, computer science and engineering, chemical engineering were added with their own wings and infrastructure. As time passed on Post Graduate Courses, Diploma Entry Courses, Integrated Post Graduate Courses and Ph D Programmes started in the College and the infrastructure had been gradually added.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) was started in the year 1959. This department is offering B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and two M.Tech programs: Industrial Engineering and Production Engineering. Several Research scholars are pursuing Ph.Ds in all the classical areas of Mechanical Engineering and upcoming areas too. So far around 70 Ph.Ds have been awarded. The faculty members have published about 450 technical papers in different journals and conferences. The academic activities are supported by 14 laboratories and are refurbished with TEQIP funds. The department is focusing major research in the areas of welding, vibration, tribology, metal cutting, composite materials, solar energy, lean manufacturing, CAPP, Supply chains, Quality control, etc. and also department of mechanical engineering is revising the courses in every two years to meet the industrial requirement. As a consequence every year majority of students from mechanical engineering department are placed in different industries and getting admission in reputed organizations in and aboard.
